‘Dear Humans’ (Giulio Ammendola, 2021) is a sculptural sound installation that invites visitors to engage with the theme of artificial intelligence by interacting with a modified typewriter able to generate text output and type it autonomously.

Visitors communicate with the artwork by answering a series of questions which inform the style and content of the correspondence they are going to co-create, ultimately commissioning a work of art(ificial intelligence). Combining the customary with the ironic, formal and informal, the experience results in the creation of a physical letter in which every word is constantly weighed against a thousand others while all choices are made by an invisible, silent, creator. The finished letter is then folded, and stamped by an invigilator; the visitors will be able to receive it on site or decide to send it to a real address of their choice.

The machine automatically generates and types a letter by processing, analysing and utilising thousands of renowned artist letters the model was trained on. This installation is designed to be fun, quirky and entertaining, but it also raises important questions around how our perception of authorship will change as machine learning is becoming increasingly good at generating text content.
